Major upgrades for loving home
A unique renovations winnipeg project nonetheless for a loving family and their two children in wheelchairs. With many structural changes done, it was a challenge but absolutely worth it, knowing this family will be able to live comfortable and barrier free.
Accessible home remodel in Transcona, Manitoba
The foster parents of 2 disabled children were in need of some big changes to their home. Both children being confined to wheelchairs had difficulty maneuvering around the home. There were a few problems with their current layout. There weren’t enough bedrooms on the main floor and the bathroom wasn’t sufficient for wheelchairs. The outlining goal was to add a proper accessible bathroom on the main floor and a second bedroom near the bathroom.
Our accessible construction expertise was an excellent match for the customer’s home, which included a complete turnover of the bathroom. Our approach included extra time for cleaning and respectful to the occupants. As the home was always occupied, we wanted to make sure everyone faced as little disruption as possible and safety. Although, the project was managed efficiently to be completed in a timely manner.
Challenges and details
Our client’s demands were to have their house accomodate their 2 children in wheelchairs. it just had to be practical, safe and look good. Simple right? Our initial assessment determined that the soon to-be accessible washroom was relatively small. It needed to be expanded to give room for accessible fixtures and for parents or caregivers to provide assistance with ease.
Another important task on the list was to add a bedroom on the main floor. And having it close to the bathroom was request.
Essentially, we redesigned their main floor. Primarily converted an existing family room into a bedroom and bathroom. We widened all doorways to 36 inches to accommodate the wheelchairs. Changed flooring to better suit the wheelchairs.
After looking at the space, we came up with a terrific layout and design that’ll please the safety and practicality of the home. Our list of amenities for the bathroom comprised of adding a zero threshold shower, safety accessible grab bars, wheelchair accessible vanity, non slip tile, heat lamp, and bright LED lighting with dimmers.
Structural Alterations
The work to be done meant a few structural alterations. Everything was stripped right to the studs. This allowed us to install proper water proofing for the zero threshold shower and tile flooring. At the same time we added 3/4″ plywood on all of the walls. The plywood gives us the strength to support grab bars and aids around the bathroom. This enabled grab bars to be installed anywhere to make sure everything is within its optimal reaching distance.
Adding a bathroom means plumbing. Some major plumbing work had to be done by adding drains and supply lines. By adding rooms and a humid room like a bathroom, the HVAC system needs to be looked at aswell to avid moisture problems. So, we had to add ducting properly to make the air flow up to code.Â
Zero threshold shower, side grab bar and accessible toilet compartments
The accessible washroom shower was all done with tile and a seamless, barrier free shower. We fitted a new shower-head and controls with lever controls. We like to avoid any fixtures that require twisting, pinching or grasping. Those manoeuvres can be challenging for someone with decreased mobility. However, to go over and above accessibility, we located the shower controls at the entry of the shower. This allows them to be used from outside the shower before entering.
Finishing touches
The new vanity and sink was custom designed to fit the size of the children. We had the vanity in place with a lowered mirror to allow sitting at vanity.
This project turned out extremely well and I am proud of our team’s accomplishment. We can rest assured that our client will feel safe while using the space and that it will last for generations to come.
